THE CONNECTICUT COURANT & WEEKLY INTELLIGENCER, Hartford, February 25, 1783

* Provisional Articles of Peace
* Ending the Revolutionary War
* America declared independent

Certainly the most notable content in this issue is the very historic speech by the King of England to his Parliament, dated Dec. 5, 1782, which takes most of page 2, declaring that the Americans are free & independent people. Most of the text can be seen in the photos but some of the more important portions include: "...I lost no time giving the necessary orders to prohibit the further prosecution of offensive war upon the continent of North America...I did not hesitate to go the full length of the powers vested in me & offered to declare them Free and Independent States, by an Article to be inserted in the Treaty of Peace. Provisional Articles are agreed upon, to take effect whenever Terms of Peace shall be finally settled with the Court of France..." and so much more as can be seen.  The Provisional Articles of peace the king refers to would be the treaty signed in Paris just five days before the king's statement.
Further to this historic report is a report from London which includes: "...that an express has just arrived from Paris who brings the preliminary articles for a peace, signed on the 30 of November, by the ambassadors on the part of England, and those on the part of the United States of America, it now only remains to sign the same articles between Great Britain and France to constitute a general peace...". And further supported in the following report with: "...we are informed that since the signing the Preliminaries for a Peace between Great Britain and the Thirteen States of America, as intimated in the above mentioned  Notification, the Ambassadors of France had not then acceded to them...". Page 3 also begins with a report: "The important and agreeable intelligence of a peace being concluded between the belligerent powers...gains ground daily, and seems now to be confirmed...".
This is a very historic announcement & great to have this content in an American newspaper.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, very ornate masthead, various wear at the central fold causes a small hole at the fold juncture, and some minor perforation, as well as some rubbing loss to a few letters. Toned with some staining to the top half of the front page
