October 05, 1957

THE HARTFORD TIMES, October 5, 1957

* Sputnik 1 (1st report)
* World's 1st orbiting artificial satellite
* Space race begins

A very significant report in the space race, with a two line banner head reading: "Soviet Artificial Moon Races About Earth; Scientists Plot Path, Radio Signals Heard" with a related diagram showing the track of Sputnik, plus subheads as well.
This event shocked the American scientific community and sufficiently scared the Americans into an all-out space race. There was great fear at the time of Soviet dominance of space and the potential use of satellites for military purposes (see hyperlink for much more).
A very significant issue for any space-themed collection. Complete in 40 pages, foxing at the fold, a little wear at the margins, generally nice.
