THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, February, 1773 A very nice magazine from just before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.Over 5 pages are taken up with: "Proceedings in Parliament". Further on is a curious article: "An Easy & Practicable Plan for increasing the Consumption of Tea, augmenting the Revenue..." in light of the Boston Tea Party which would happen later in this year.
An article: "Description of the Tapur (tapir] and Hippopotome [hippopotamus]" includes a full page plate showing both.
There is a full page print titled: "Plan of an Ancient Camp at Ratby, Near Leicester" (see photos) with a related article.
Among other articles within are: "The Poor's Law, its Evil Influence" "On the Imposing Articles of Religion" "Critical Remarks on M. de Voltaire" and more.
Near the back are two poems titled: "Epitaph for General Wolfe". The back several pages contain the "Historical Chronicle" with various news events of the day.
The noted plate is one three plates called for, the other two not present. Complete in 56 pgs., full title/index page with an engraving of St. John's Gate, measures 5 by 8 inches, some staining on the front cover otherwise in very nice condition.
