His new beard makes Lincoln 'an exceedingly presentable man'....

Item # 629608

February 13, 1861

WESTERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, Cincinnati, Ohio, Feb. 13, 1861

* Abraham Lincoln as president-elect

Page 5 has several small yet significant items including a report of Lincoln leaving his hometown & his route to Washington; "Fort Pickens" concerning the situation at South Carolina; "the Palmetto flag" noting: "The first attempt of a vessel to enter a foreign port under the flag of the "Independent Republic of South Carolina" was made at Havana..." with more; and the most interesting: "Whiskers" which notes: "The forbidding visage of Mr Lincoln has been modified by a growth of whiskers. The improvement...is remarkable. The gaunt, hollow cheeks and long, lank jawbones are so enveloped as to give fullness & rotundity to the entire face, and if he escapes the barbers, the President elect will go to Washington an exceedingly presentable man..." (see).
Eight pages, various foxing, generally good condition.
