July 15, 1942

THE NEW YORK TIMES, July 15, 1942

* Battle of Midway
* Official U.S. Navy report
* World War II - WWII

The front page has a four column headline: "JAPAN LOST 20 OF 80 SHIPS OFF MIDWAY" with subheads that include: "Yorktown Was Hit In Midway Melee" and more w/ photo of the USS Lexington being hit. This was the official report from the United States Navy on the famed battle. The battle was actually fought over a month earlier, but the details were just now being released including the news of the USS Yorktown being sunk. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other, sports and advertisements of the day with much on World War II. Complete in 38 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Minor crease on the front page, very nice condition.
