July 26, 1814
THE WAR, New York, July 26, 1814 All of pages 1, 2 and nearly half of pg. 3 are taken up with the very detailed: "Official Account of the Cruise of the Essex" signed in type: D. Porter. A terrific account of the ship's exploits during the previous 1 1/2 years. Also inside: "...Letter form Capt. Porter to the Secretary of the Navy" also signed: David Porter; "Official Account of the Loss of the Alligator" and a letter from Commodore Chauncey to the Sec. of the Navy signed: Isaac Chauncey, followed by a similar letter signed by: John Rodgers.
Four pages, 9 3/4 by 12 1/4 in., never-trimmed margins, very nice, clean condition.
This is a fascinating, short-lived newspaper, having begun in 1812 with the exclusive purpose of reporting on the War of 1812 (hence the title). When the war ended, so did this newspaper.
