Battle of Chippewa & much more...

Item # 626761

August 2, 1814

THE WAR, New York, Aug. 2, 1814

* Battle of Chippewa - Ontario
* General Winfield Scott victory

The front page has: "Correspondence Accompanying Capt. Porter's Official Letter" as well as: "American Official Account of the Battle of Chippewa" which takes a full column on pg. 1 & carries over to take most of pg. 2 (see for portions). During this historic battle near Lake Erie the outnumbered American forces under General Winfield Scott inflict a decisive defeat on the British forces led by Gen. Ball.
Other articles on the inside & back pgs. are headed: "Interesting Particulars" "British Account" Obituary & Biographical" "State of New York--General Orders" "Capture of Eastport" "Defence of New York" "The President Frigate, & Pantagenet" and "War Department".
Four pages, 9 3/4 by 12 1/4 in., never-trimmed margins, very nice, clean condition.

This is a fascinating, short-lived newspaper, having begun in 1812 with the exclusive purpose of reporting on the War of 1812 (hence the title). When the war ended, so did this newspaper.
