September 26, 1812

THE WAR, New York, Sept. 26, 1812

* Siege of Detroit - surrender
* Battle of Fort Detroit
* William Hull

One-third of the front page is headed: "GEN. HULL'S Official Statement" being his prefacing comments concerning the much lengthier & very detailed report which fills the balance of the ftpg. & almost all of pg. 2, being General Hull's official report on his surrender of the fort at Detroit to the British General Brock. Terrific to have this historic report in this newspaper. This is followed by yet another detailed report, from Col. Cass who was under the command of Genera Wm. Hull at Detroit, with his comments on the surrender. This takes nearly 1 1/2 pages.
The balance of the issue is almost entirely taken up with other reports on the War of 1812 including: "From the Frontiers" "Kentuckians Broke loose for the Defence of their Country" "Another Catastrophe at Richmond" "Important Improvement in Cannon" "The Indians" "General Hull" ad more.
This is one of just a few 8 page issues of this title, 9 3/4 by 12 1/4 in., never-trimmed margins, very nice, clean condition.

This is a fascinating, short-lived newspaper, having begun in 1812 with the exclusive purpose of reporting on the War of 1812 (hence the title). When the war ended, so did this newspaper.
