THE NEW YORK TIMES, July 8, 1948

* Satchel Paige finally enters MLB
* Negro baseball star pitcher
* Cleveland Indians

The sport's section (page 26) has a two column heading: "Satchel Paige, Ace Negro Pitcher, Signed by Indians for Relief Role" with subhead and nice related photo showing him with Bob Feller in the Indians dugout. This was when Satchel Paige signed a contract to play with the Cleveland Indians. Because of his age, many thought this was a publicity stunt but Paige would end up finishing his first season with a 6-1 record. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 46 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Minor creasing on the front page, very nice condition.
