January 16, 1863

WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, Jan. 16, 1863

* President Abraham Lincoln
* Emancipation Proclamation
* Rare Confederate title

This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
Terrific & very historic content in this issue, as the ftpg. has: "Lincoln's Proclamation" being a complete printing of the Emancipation Proclamation & signed by him in type: Abraham Lincoln.
Also on the front page is: "The North Becoming Tired of War, A Convention of all the States Demanded" "The Slaughter at Fredericksburg" "General Lee's Address to the Army" which is signed by him in type: R. E. Lee, Gen'l. Also: "Stuart's Late Raid Round the Yankees" and "Speech of President Davis to the Legislature of Mississippi" which takes the entire last column & carries over to take 1 1/2 columns on pg. 2.
Pages 2 & 3 also include much great content, including: "The News" "The Congress--The Currency" "Lincoln's Proclamation" being an editorial on the Emancipation Proclamation". Also: "President Davis" "Northern Items" "Gen. Bragg's Late Victory" "The President's Arrival in Richmond" which is concerning Jefferson Davis, and more, including an ad headed: "Deserters".
Complete in 4 pages, a damp stain in the upper right quadrant, scattered foxing, otherwise nice.
An opportunity for not only a very rare Confederate title but one with terrific content.
