NEW YORK TIMES, Aug. 1, 1865 The back page has: "Out-Door Sports" "Base Ball" "Eureka Vs. Mutual--The First Grand Match For The Championship--The Mutuals The Victors--Score 27-12--Over Six Thousand Spectators Present." Included is a detailed description beginning: "Base ball has undoubtedly become an institution of the country, and a popular one at that, witness...the large concourse of people...assembled at Newark yesterday...", plus more about the game including the box score.
Page 4 has a report mentioning they captured in Mexico a man presumed to be John Surratt, involved in the Lincoln murder. His mother, Mary, was hanged for her involvement (this report was untrue: he had fled to Canada). Also a bit noting that: "...Mrs. Lincoln is living in perfect seclusion at the Hyde Park Hotel...Both her sons reside with her...".
