PUNCH, London, a bound volume with all 52 issues from January 7 thru December 29, 1888. This was a weekly political satire newspaper with a wealth of illustrations.
Of interest are the four prints within which relate to the Jack the Ripper hysteria which plagued London at the time. Although most newspapers reporting the latest news on the murders & investigations, including newspapers in America, only a few publications contained related illustrations. Punch was one. The Sept. 22 issue has a full page print: "Blind-Man's Buff"; Sept. 29 has a full page: "The Nemesis of Neglect"; Oct. 13 has a three-quarter pg. print: "Horrible London: Or, The Pandemonium of Posters" and also another print, full page: "Whitechapel, 1888". The October 20 issue has a fifth print with perhaps a more oblique reference: "Is Detection A Failure?" There is a wealth of other unrelated prints in the volume as well.
The volume is bound in three-quarter, red leather bindings with gold ink & marbled boards. Some rubbing to the extremities. The interior pages are in very nice, clean condition. As was typical with Punch volumes, they were bound without title pages for each week's edition so the issues seem to run continuously, however the date for each is printed at the top of each page.
A great opportunity for a set of all four (or 5?) Jack the Ripper illustrations in this significant Punch volume. Measures 8 1/2 by 11 inches.
