Nicholson becomes governor of Virginia and Maryland...

Item # 621280

January 1, 1693

THE LONDON GAZETTE, Jan. 1, 1693

* Francis Nicholson
* Virginia and Maryland governor

This issue is from the era which predates the first successful newspaper in America, which did not begin publishing until 1704. Any notable colonial American news to be found in a period newspaper would likely only be found in this famous title from England.
The photo shows the back page report covering the nomination of Colonel Francis Nicholson, the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and Maryland, to be the "... Governor in Chief of the said Province of Maryland...". A very rare and early reference to colonial politics in America.
Complete as a single sheet issue with lite foxing, otherwise in very good condition.
