THE FLORIDIAN, Tallahassee, July 22, 1848

* Rare antebellum title

Nineteenth century newspapers from Florida are uncommon, particularly those from before the Civil War. Here is such an issue from the capital city of Florida, thirteen years before the Civil War. Notable front page content includes: "AN ACT to provide for the purchase of the manuscript papers of the late James Madison, former President of the United States...", signed in type: James K. Polk. The ftpg. also has the "President's Message And The Mexican Treaty" that concludes on pg. 2, signed in type: James K. Polk. Pg. 2 has an endorsement supporting Gen. Lewis Cass, Of Michigan" for President & "Gen. William O. Butler" as his running mate. On pg. 3 under an engraving of the Great Seal is a notice for a public sale of land in Florida, signed in type: James K. Polk.
