February 23, 1765

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Feb. 23, 1765

* Beast of Gévaudan
* Stamp Act prelude

Inside has over a full page taken up with a review of a "celebrated" pamphlet entitled: "The Regulations Lately Made Concerning the Colonies and the Taxes Imposed Upon them, Considered", This has some fascinating reading with much consideration of the various colonies, particularly "the Floridas" in terms of their value to England. This review is timely given that within a few weeks Parliament would pass the hated Stamp Act, the first direct tax on the American colonies.
The facing page has a very interesting letter concerning the pamphlet as well, noting that: "...shewn pretty evidently that the properest measures have been taken to render them of the greatest possible advantage to the Mother country without encroaching upon the liberties & privileges which the colonists have a right to as subjects...".
Also, a report from Monpellier, France, concerning a wild beast which became known as the Beast of Gevaudan, attacking seven children, wounding most but also killing some. He also then attacked a woman and bit her head off. "The King has promised 2000 crowns, as a reward to any one who shall kill him".
Eight pages, very nice condition.
