February 07, 1863

NEW YORK WEEKLY TRIBUNE, Feb. 7, 1863

* United States Colored Troops
* Negro soldier regiment bill

The front page has many rather small column heads on the Civil War. Perhaps the best item is on page 2 headed: "Negro Soldiers" which has near the beginning: "...disloyal minority in the House...resisted the passage of Stevens's bill authorizing the President to raise & equip 150,000 soldiers or African descent..Meanwhile, in the Dept. of the South a full regiment of blacks has been enlisted...already uniformed & armed...that it had attained a remarkable proficiency in the short period during which idt has been drilled..." with much, much more on the high quality of soldiers from among the African-Americans. One paragraph begins: "Drunkenness, the bane of our army, does not exist among the black troops..." and much more.
Eight pages, nice condition.
