April 02, 1865

SAVANNAH DAILY HERALD, Georgia, April 2, 1865

* Very rare civil war era issue from the Southern coast
* Sherman's captured city

A scarce title from this Confederate stronghold until it fell to the Yankees on Christmas Day, 1864, just over 3 months prior to the printing of this issue. The front page has a "Congratulatory Letter" from General Howard to Major General Logan concerning his involvement in the taking of Savannah and Columbia (see). The front page also has a full column of "Interesting Items" which is a collection of odd tidbits (see for portions).
Page 2 has: "The War In Florida" "Additional Particulars of the Late Raid" "Rebel Account of the Battle at Natural Bridge" "From Jacksonville, Florida" "Loss of the George C. Collins" "Interesting Rebel News from Florida" and more, with the back page having: "Important From Sherman!" "The Fight on the 20th" "Great Defeat of the Enemy" "An Arrival from Morehead City" and more.
Page 3 is taken up with ads.
Very rare to find a newspaper from Union occupied Savannah before the end of the Civil War. Complete in 4 pages, small rubbing hole near the top of the front leaf, otherwise very nice condition.
A rare newspaper from just two days before the fall of Richmond & 6 days before Lee's surrender to Grant.
