April 14, 1865

THE LIBERATOR, Boston, April 14, 1865  This is the famous anti-slavery newspaper by famed abolitionist publisher William Lloyd Garrison. The masthead features two engravings, one of a slave auction and the other showing slaves being emancipated (see).
A terrific issue on the end of the Civil War, not to mention--coincidentally--that this issue was printed on the day of the Lincoln assassination.
Page 2 has an editorial headed: "The Death of the Slaveholders' Rebellion" beginning: "We go to press this week in the midst of universal publication. The air is filled with the music of bells & the reverberation of cannon..." and much more (see).
The significant content is on page 3, the top of which is headed: "Surrender of Gen. Lee And His Whole Army". Included are the eleven dispatches back & forth between the leaders, each signed in type: R. E. Lee or U.S. Grant (see). This is followed by: "The Capture of Richmond" "News From Richmond" "The Siege of Mobile" "Lee's Army Routed By Sheridan" and more.
Four pages, a bit irregular at the spine & partially loose at the spine, generally nice condition.
