This was a strongly Tory (supportive of the British cause) newspaper which began in 1775 and closed shop in May of 1778 when the British evacuated Philadelphia.
One-third of the front page is taken up with a letter with commentary concerning the recently created Articles of Confederation, beginning: "By your Packet I am informed that the Confederacy of the United States, as proposed by Congress, has been assented to by the state or Virginia; and that the inhabitants of the town of Boston have instructed their representatives to assent to the ratification of it..." with much more (see). Over half of another column on the front page is taken up with a: "PROCLAMATION" signed in type: W. Howe, concerning shipping (see).
Page 2 and a bit of pg. 3 are taken up with an interesting collection of correspondences between Generals Gates and Burgoyne concerning negotiations in the terms of surrender at Saratoga (see). The back page has even more concerning Burgoyne. Page 3 has other items concerning the Revolutionary War, as well as an item: "The report of Dr. Franklin's being assassinated appears to be without foundation as he was well when this vessel sailed...".
Four pages, damp stain to a lower corner, numeric notations in margins next to ads (this was the editor's copy), generally in nice condition. Not surprisingly, being a Tory newspaper the masthead features an engraving of the Royal coat-of-arms.
