THE PENNSYLVANIA LEDGER: OR THE PHILADELPHIA MARKET-DAY ADVERTISER, March 14, 1778

* Revolutionary War Tory original
* Rare Pro British issue from America

This was a strongly Tory (supportive of the British cause) newspaper which began in 1775 and closed shop in May of 1778 when the British evacuated Philadelphia.
The first column of the ftpg. includes a "Proclamation" issued by General Howe that begins: "It being necessary, that a plentiful supply of...fresh provisions...be provided for the use of his Majesty's army...and the inhabitants of...Philadelphia...I... encourage his Majesty's faithful subjects...to exert themselves in raising the... supplies to issue this Proclamation, assuring them of all possible protection..." and more, signed in type: W Howe.
Page 2 has a letter from General Washington written to "several of his Friends" in 1776, signed in type: G.W. Page 3 has, under "Philadelphia", an extract of a letter mentioning, in part: "...an expedition of 5,000 men is gone against Canada, under the Marquis de Fayette. Another person says, the rebels are building very extensive barracks at Rutland, an inland town, for troops; we suppose for General Burgoyne's army." (see)
Included as well is a single sheet "Supplement to the Pennsylvania Ledger" of the same date, taken up entirely with notices & advertisements.
The back page has the lyrics of "An irregular Ode to Peace". Not surprisingly, being a Tory newspaper the masthead features an engraving of the Royal coat-of-arms.
Four pages plus the Supplement, many numeric notations in margins next to ads (this was the editor's copy), damp stain to a lower corner, generally in nice condition. The Supplement is evenly toned.
