October 27, 1670

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, Oct. 27, 1670

* 17th century Judaica content
* Jewish - Jews

The front page includes an item from Rome: "The Pope seems much concerned that after all his care for the reestablishment of the Mount of Piety, few persons will be perswaded to adventure to take up moneys from them, but rather apply themselves to the Jews, who furnish them at a far greater interest. This week a congregation was held upon this affair where some ways were proposed for taking this trade out of the hands of the Jews, whose cause was there so well managed that nothing was concluded to their disadvantage." (see)
The back page has an interesting item on the King opening Parliament, noting: "...habited in His Royal Robes, the crown upon His Head, He took His place with the usual ceremonies in the Chair of Estate..." (see).
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, 7 by 11 inches, loss at the bottom margin does not affect any text, nice condition. This is the world's oldest continually published English language newspaper, having begun in 1665 and is still publishing today.
