THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, May, 1749  Among the interesting items in this issue are: "Knight of Malta Engages a Monster" "Of the Cold in Siberia" "Description of the Fireworks in Dublin"  "On the Fireworks" "Woman Carry'd a Child 16 Years" "A Description of the Province of Quito, and other Parts of Peru..." and more.
One report notes: "...great number of persons of quality & distinction were at the chapel...to hear several pieces of vocal and instrumental musick compos'd by George Frederick Handel, Esq., for the benefit of the foundation..." 
Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" which has the latest news events of the day.
Neither of the two plates called for are present. Complete in 48 pages, 5 1/4 by 8 inches, full title/contents page with an engraving of St. John's Gate, very nice condition.

A very nice pre-Revolutionary War magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
