THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, Dec. 24, 1666 An extremely early issue of this title, the oldest continually published English language newspaper in the world, having begun just the previous year in 1665 and still printing today. This is issue #115.
Amongst the various reports from various cities in Europe is a front page item from Norwich, England, which lists the count of those who died from the Plague which was ravaging much of Europe at this time: "Our Bill of Mortality for this last week runs thus, buried of all Diseases 17. Whereof of the Plague 14." It is rare to find any mention of the Plague in period newspapers, and more rare for it to be on the front page.
Also of significance is the great back page item under the London dateline: "All persons who are willing to serve & furnish this city with timber, brick, lime, stone, glass, tiles, slates, and all other materials for building, may in person repair to the committee of Common Council at Gresham House, London..." with a bit more (see). Terrific & quite rare to find reference to rebuilding after the Great Fire less than 3 months after the event.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper measuring 7 by 11 1/4 inches, in great condition.
