* 500 Negro slaves killed in battle
The issue is filled with various reports from throughout Europe, much of it military reporting. The back page includes a report noting in part: "...from the Barbados...differing in their accounts of some particulars, affirm in the generall, that on the 23 of Aprill last, the Lord Willougby, Governor of the Caribee Islands...take aboard them 700 souldiers & to carry them to St. Christophers for the assistance of the English colony who had some apprehensions of the French design upon them...they calling at Antego...the inhabitants informed them that the French...had put 500 Negroes into armes (to whom they promised freedom for their service) and altogether fell suddenly upon the English Colony, putting them cruelly to the sword; the French Governor declaring he would give quarter to none of them during his life, but he being kild, some few of the English remaining were saved..." (see).
Included at the bottom of the back page is a report on the deaths the Great Plague which afflicted much of Europe at this time: "The account of this weeks bill runs thus. The total 179. Of the Plague 23. Decreased in all 18. Decreased of the Plague 8." (see)
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, 7 by 11 inches, a few tiny worm holes in blank margins, great condition.
A very early issue of the world's oldest continually published English language newspaper, having begun in 1666 and is still publishing today.
