* re. Rye House Plot - treason trial
The front page begins with a report from "Jamaica" noting in part: "...a second confirmation of the news from the South Seas, that the privateers there are in great distress; their return home by land is cut off by the Indians deserting them& their vessels are not sufficient...to carry them about by sea...". A bit further on is mention of a ship arriving: "nothing but a parcel of Indian Corn, which is the chief provision they had there to rely upon." And also mention of a ship: "...will sail out of port to morrow in order to his cruising to the windward part of the island in search of Pirates."
The back page has a report noting: "...Charles Bateman was brought to his tryal...upon an indictment of High=-Treason for conspiring with other false traytors the death of the late King of Ever Blessed Memory & to raise a Rebellion within this Kingdom...found guilty...received sentence of death..." (see). This was likely for his involvement in the Rye House Plot, or the Monmouth Rebellion.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, 6 1/2 by 11 inches, an ink stain to the ftpg. not affecting any noted content, generally nice condition.
