February 16, 1684

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, Feb. 16, 1684  All of pages 1, 2 and half of pg. 3 are taken up with letters of condolence to King James II on the recent death of his brother King Charles II, portions including: "...highly sensible of the death of your Royal brother, our late gracious soveraign of ever happy memory...console that great loss with our sacred Majesty, and congratulate your most happy succession to the throne of your ancestors..." with other letters reading similarly (see photos). Much of the back page is taken up with reports of the new King being proclaimed in various towns of England, plus a report from Whitehall which begins: "This evening was privately solemnized the funeral of his late Majesty King Charles the Second, from the Painted Chamber in the Palace at Westminster to the Abbey Church there. The body was carried under a velvet canopy..." with more on the funeral (see). Most of this 4 page issue is taken up with text on the funeral of Charles II or the ascension of James II.
Complete in 4 pages, 6 1/2 by 11 inches, very nice condition.
