THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, July 26, 1683

* Charles II of England
* Assassination plot

On Saturday 21 July 1683, in the wake of the Rye House Plot to assassinate King Charles II and his brother James Duke of York, the Convocation of the University of Oxford passed its
judgment and decree: "... against certain pernicious books and damnable doctrines, destructive to the sacred persons of princes, their state and government, and of all humane society." as the introduction states (see).
Of the 27 propositions denounced by the Convocation, perhaps the most notable is the 23rd which essentially gave permission for killing a king. According to this document: "Wicked Kings and Tyrants ought to be put to death, and if the Judges and inferior Magistrates will not do their office, the power of the sword devolves to the People..." with more (see).
Over a full page is taken up with various letters to the king concerning the threat against his life in the Rye House Plot (see).
This is one of the rare 4 page issues from this period, 7 by 11 inches and in very nice, clean condition.
