THE CALEDONIAN, St. Johnsbury, Vermont, April 21, 1865
* Abraham Lincoln assassination (1st report)
* Ford's Theater - John Wilkes Booth
Being a weekly newspaper this issue has a first report of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Pages 2 and 3 have all column black-bordered with a rather dramatic one column headline: "President Lincoln ASSASSINATED ! " "Attempt To Assassinate Secretary Seward" with the detailed report taking over half of page 2 and nearly half of page 3. One advantage of a weekly newspaper report is that it encapsulates all the news reports of the actual event and the follow-up details, not found in daily newspapers of the time. The photos show only a small portion of the lengthy report.
The first column has a nice editorial report headed: "Murder of President Lincoln" with a graphic piece at the top and extremely wide black borders above & below (see).
Complete in four pages, never bound nor trimmed, many folds which cause a small hole near the top of the Lincoln assassination report & affects 4 words (see), other minor fold wear.
