THE PENNSYLVANIA LEDGER OR THE WEEKLY ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, Dec. 27, 1777

* Rare Revolutionary War title from America

This was a Tory newspaper published in Philadelphia when the British occupied the city. It began in 1775 and ended when the British evacuated the city in May of 1778. Not surprisingly, the masthead features an engraving of the Royal coat-of-arms.
The first column on the ftpg. features a Proclamation signed in type by: W. Howe, the General and Commander in Chief of the British forces, focused on punishing all who destroy property of the locals in the process of their occupation of Philadelphia. This is followed by a detailed report of: "Proceedings of the Army and Navy Upon Delaware" with talk of a skirmish at Mud Island, or Fort Mifflin, noting in part: "...the rebels hoisted a jack half staff as a signal for assistance from their fleet...sent down a number of boats filled with men...The rebels evacuated the fort about 2 o'clock in the morning after setting fire to the barracks...The loss of the rebels, in killed & wounded...amounts to near 500 men..." with much more (see). Also mention that: "On the 17th, Lt. General Earl Cornwallis...with about 3000men marched to Chester where they surprised a picquet guard of militia, killed seven & took 25 prisoners..." with much more. Another report mentions the: "...particulars of the descent of the rebels upon Long Island...300 of them came over the Sound from Connecticut with their customary intention of plundering & returning immediately..." and more.
The balance of the issue is almost entirely taken up with various advertisements. Four pages, a very light damp stain to a lower corner, numeric notations next to ads (this was the editor's copy), nice condition.
