THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, May 12, 1778  On page 2 are war reports which appeared in the Royal American Gazette, a Loyalist newspaper. The first reportconcerning the northern expedition to Canada says that  LaFayette and Mr. Conroy were suppose to be the commanders and were promised by Congress an army of 5000 men in addition to their own regiments, but when they arrived "at the lakes", the number could not be mustered and the project "laid aside". The report also says: "...the rebels haven taken post at Ticonderoga, and intend to throw up fortifications at that place." (see) A second report states that the folks of Massachusetts-bay and New Hampshire are outraged at their southern sister colonies for lack of support in the expedition to Canada, and mentions that a resolution was passed to make "...an attempt upon Halifax...with the utmost vigor."
Elsewhere mentions a detachment of the royal army at Phila. consisting of 6000 men commanded by Maj-Gen. Gray "...crossed the Delaware in two divisions, and marched into the Jersies."
An interesting extract of a letter from a British officer at "Princetown" mentions: "I just saw a Philadelphia paper, containing a copy of general orders, issued by Gen. Howe...wherein he forbids any one calling another rebel." (see)
Page 6 has a report from a loyalist soldier describing his circumstances: "...Our company consists of about 75, all hearty jolly fellows (except myself); we are regimented at our own expense, though Gen. Clinton finds us arms, and each man 18 rounds of cartridges. The season...is at present very sharp and a great deal of snow...", plus word that rebel deserters come in daily "...and...they look most wretchedly."
Eight pages, 11 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches, very good condition.
