A back page report begins: "On the 13th of June...the assembly of Pennsylvania passed an act, obliging all male white inhabitants of that state to give assurances of allegiance to the same..." followed by details of the oath's conditions which read, in part: "As allegiance and protection are reciprocal, and those who will not bear the former are not (nor ought not) to be entitled to the benefits of the latter...". Two dates are then listed as the deadline in which those "white males" over 18 must "...take and subscribe the said oath or affirmation before...one of the justices of peace of the city or county where they respectively inhabit...". Hereafter is the text of the oath, beginning: "I do swear, or affirm, that I renounce and refuse all allegiance to George III, King of Great Britain...and that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a free and independent state...." and more. A great item related to the continued quest for freedom during the post-Declaration period of the Revolutionary War.
