April 04, 1882

DAILY TIMES, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, April 4, 1882

* Jesse James assassination
* Robert & Charles Ford
* St. Joseph, Missouri

The back page has a rather inconspicuous report at the bottom of the first column: "Death of the Notorious Robber Jesse James". The report, which continues at the top of the next column, reads in full: "Jesse James, the notorious robber was shot dead in St. Joseph, Mo., by Charles and Robert Ford, who then gave themselves up and were lodged in jail. The Fords formerly belonged to the James Gang, but have recently been acting as detectives to catch James, hoping to gain the large reward offered for his apprehension, and they arrived at St. Joseph a week ago for the purpose of capturing him. It seems they feared to attempt to take him alive, and one of them shot him down while he was off his guard." This is actually one of the better reports about the death of James, some being just a short sentence or two in length.
Four pages, very nice condition.
