June 22, 1776

THE PENNSYLVANIA LEDGER, Philadelphia, June 22, 1776  This was a decidedly Tory newspaper, supportive of the British efforts in America. This newspaper ended publication in June, 1778 when the British evacuated the city. Keep in mind also that this issue is dated less than two weeks before the Declaration of Independence.
The front page begins with an advertisement for pamphlet of a Loyalist responding to Thomas Paine's Common Sense, titled: "The True Interest of America Impartially Stated In Certain Strictures on a Pamphlet entitled COMMON SENSE, By an American" with a bit more (see). See this hyperlink for more on this work. The ftpg. also has several news items relating to America including: "This day was launched...a new frigate...Eagle, commanded by Lord Howe sailed for America." and "His has appointed Brig. Gen. Howe and Clinton to be generals in America...The Brunswickers are destined to Canada & the Hessians...to Boston. Burgoyne's light horse go to Boston...".
Page 2 mentions a skirmish in North Carolina, plus: "...fact that all the Tories that were in Lord Dunmore's service have left him...". There is also a great "Proclamation" by General Clinton, beginning: "Whereas a most unprovoked and wicked rebellion hath for some time past prevailed...within his Majesty's province of North Carolina, & the inhabitants (forgetting their allegiance to their Sovereign...) have proceeded to the total subversion of all lawful authority..." with more, offering free pardon to those who return their allegiance to the King (see). Also included is an: "Extract of a Letter from General Arnold, dated Montreal, May 28, 1776" (see), plus a report form Albany which begins: "I was this moment informed by Gen. Schuyler that about 300 of the regular troops came up the river St. Lawrence as far as the Tree Rivers...Gen. Sullivan with his brigade, arrived..." with more.
Page 2 also has a document from Congress signed: John Hancock, and another document beginning: "Resolved, that no man in these Colonies, charged with being a Tory, or unfriendly to the Case of American Liberty, be injured in his person or property...".
Page 3 has a nice & detailed advertisement taking three-quarters of a column, for the famous work: "A New System of MILITARY DISCIPLINE founded on Principle, by a General Officer." (see) the back page continues with some documents which relate to the Revolutionary War.
Four pages, bit irregular at the spine, small piece from a top margin affects no text, numeric notations in margins next to ads (this was the editor's copy), nice condition.
