December 31, 1856
THE SAN FRANCISCO HERALD, Dec. 31, 1856 Quite uncommon to find California newspapers from prior to the Civil War. Although this issue is stained and has many tape repairs at the spine, the value is in the single sheet "Supplementary Sheet" which is included with it, which has the entire ftpg. & a bit of the bkpg. taken up with: "THE MESSAGE of the PRESIDENT to The 34th Congress" signed in type at its conclusion: Franklin Pierce. This was Pierce's annual state-of-the-union address. This Supplement is trimmed at the margins but not touching any text, and has some stains near edges as well.
