THE ALASKAN, Sitka, Alaska Territory, September 11, 1886

* Very rare Alaska Territorial issue

Rarely are newspapers from Alaska found from before the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 when interest grew dramatically. This newspaper predates the gold rush by over ten years. This is the volume one, number 20 issue of this title.
The format of the newspaper is much like other newspapers of the day, being four pages of small folio size (measures 13 by 20  in.).
The front page has a variety of news tidbits from various locations including much of four columns headed: "United States District Court - More Convictions of Fur Seal Killers - Decision Sustaining The Liquor Prohibition In Alaska", with more on page 4.
News items continue on pages 2, 3 and 4 (including, "Inquiry into the Anti-Chinese Movement In Juneau") with a mix of ads as well. The bkpg. has an item headed: "The Russian Church". The front page has an ad headed: "How To Reach Alaska.  The Pacific Coast Steamship Company".
Complete in 4 pages with only minimal fold-wear. There is a news agent's stamp just above the masthead. Generally in very nice, clean condition.
