December 30, 1799

INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE & UNIVERSAL ADVERTISER, Boston, Dec. 30, 1799  All four pages are trimmed in wide, black mourning rules for the death of George Washington. Page 3 has a great account headed: "Interment of Washington" which includes an engraving of the funeral bier, followed by various text including: "On Wednesday last the moral part of Washington the Great--the Father of his country and Friend of man, was consigned to the tomb, with solemn honours and funeral pomp. A multitude of persons assembled...at Mount Vernon..." with much more. Further on is an account of the coffin noting the inscription (see), as well as the order of the funeral procession which includes an engraving of his coffin, showing the position of the pall bearers to either side, with more on the procession.
Pages 2 and 3 have various accounts of the news of Washington's death being received at various parts, etc. The front page has a timely article headed: "Brevity of Human Life" followed by a: "Calculation of Human Existence".
Four pages, the right portion of the issue is foxed resulting in various chipping at the margin and archival repairs on pgs. 2, 3 & 4. Fortunately none of the Washington related text is affected.
