February 23, 1789

THE CONNECTICUT COURANT, Hartford, Feb. 23, 1789

* George Washington presidential election
* Ethan Allen - Revolutionary War patriot death

A page 3 report from Philadelphia is brief yet quite significant, reading: "We are happy to inform our readers that the ten federal electors, chosen by this state, met at Reading on Wednesday the 4th instant, and gave ten votes for General Washington, as President, and eight for the Honorable John Adams, as Vice-President." (see). Also of significance, and inconspicuously reported on pg. 3 is: "DIED, in Vermont, the 13th instant, very suddenly, Ethan Allen, Esq. Brigadier-General of the Militia of that State, and author of the Oracles of Reason, etc."
This is America's oldest continually published newspaper having been founded in 1764 & still publishing today, as the Hartford Courant.
Four pages, some dirtiness & light staining near the spine & affects a bit of some ads, otherwise never bound nor trimmed & in nice condition.
