THE DAILY NUGGET, Tombstone, Pima County, Arizona, Oct. 9, 1880 This may well be the consummate "Old West town" much romanticized in movies and television shows, perhaps most famous for the gunfight at the OK Corral involving Wyatt Earp and the Clanton gang.
This rare issue was printed a year before this famous gunfight and is replete with advertisements with a distinctively Western theme. Has all ads on the front page, including: "The Palace Hotel" and "The Alhambra Saloon" among many others inside as well including the "Tombstone Corral".
Page 2 has a large ad for "Shaffer & Lord" described as the "Original Miners and Prospectors Store" (see). Page 3 includes a report with mention of Sheriff Earp: "C.D. Fitzhugh was arrested yesterday by Deputy Sheriff Earp on an indictment issued from the grand jury ...on charge of embracery, & was taken to Tucson...". Another report notes: "Deadwood Scotty marked another big winning last night against the Egyptian King. He blowed himself in to the tune of $1550 but was nervy enough to hold his grip & finally pulled the tiger's tail till it registered $2050...". Another item: "Tom Britton Shot" notes: "...as Tom Britton was sitting near a window in a lighted room...a man fired at him, the deadly missile making what is supposed a fatal wound...Disappearing in the darkness the cowardly wretch who fired the shot is unknown." and other typically "Western" reports and ads.
Complete in 4 pages, various tears at the margins, many of which are archivally mended. A chip near the middle of the front leaf and a piece missing from the right portion of the front leaf (see). Archivally rejoined at the spine. The issue is very fragile and must be handled carefully. A rare opportunity for this famous title from this famous Old West town.
