August 27, 1814
NILES'S WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, Maryland, August 27, 1814 This issue contains a great wealth of reporting on the War of 1812, when the British were very much in the vicinity of the city where this newspaper was published. Certainly the most historic report is on headed: "Capture Of Washington City", which also includes text concerning events in nearby Baltimore & Alexandria. Included in the text is: "...the capitol and president's house, with all the public offices, except the post office which they thought a private building, with several private buildings were fired by the enemy...they otherwise behaved much better than was expected. They did not enter Georgetown..." with more. The report on Washington has considerable detail. Terrific to have this historic report from this city so close to the nation's capital! A few small archival mends to tears to the back two leaves affecting a few words but not readability. Much more on the War of 1812 as well. Measures about 6 by 9 1/2 inches, scattered lite foxing, otherwise is in nice condition.
