February 24, 1865

THE SENTINEL, Richmond, Feb. 24, 1865  Not only a newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy, but from quite late in the war as well. The issue includes: "The War" "South Carolina" "Gen. Johnston" "The Thanks of Soldiers" "President Davis" "Negro Soldiers--Invasion" "Our Generals" "Our Future History" and more. There is also an editorial which begins: "We doubt it the world has ever before known an example such as is presented in the Confederate capital this day. Our armies are outnumbered and pressed by an enemy that seeks nothing less than our utter & eternal destruction..." with more dismal thoughts (see).
A single sheet issue with a one column masthead, as was typical with Southern newspapers late in the war (newsprint was scarce in the South), light dirtiness mostly at margins, some minor margin wear with a few discrete archival mends.
