January 25, 1865

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, Jan. 25, 1865

* Rare Confederate title
* Civil War nears the end

Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865 just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from the latter months of the Civil War. The front page includes: "Local and States News - Suffering In Wilmington"; a listing of all names of the: "North Carolina Legislature, Session 1864" & other items. The back page has: "War News - From Wilmington" "Yankee Deserters" "Particulars of The Fall of Fort Fisher" "Hood's Tennessee Campaign" "The Trans-Mississippi Army" and various other war-related items. There is also a nice, nearly column-long editorial: "Are We to Have Peace?" which includes in part: "We hope so. The outside pressure for peace is constantly growing stronger...Benjamin and Seddon are to go overboard, (Benjamin is going to run away we suspect) and Mr. Davis is pledged to a peace police. God grant this may be so, for Mr. Davis' stubborn will has been in the way of peace long enough...We hope Mr. Davis is growing wise as he grows old..." and much more.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, in very nice, clean condition.
