Item # 604728

April 22, 1865

ARMY & NAVY JOURNAL, New York, April 22, 1865

* Abraham Lincoln assassination (1st report)
* Ford's Theater - John Wilkes Booth
* Surrender of Robert E. Lee's army

Subtitled: "Gazette Of The Regular And Volunteer Forces", this 16 page issue is simply filled with military reports, almost entirely on the Civil War at this time.
Certainly the most significant content in this issue is an inside page which is entirely taken up with reports concerning the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, with black borders at the top of the page & again near the top of the facing page where the report ends. It contains a great wealth of information, is headed: "The Murder Of The President" and among its dispatches is one beginning: "This evening, at about 9:30 p.m., at Ford's Theatre, the President, while sitting in his private box with Mrs. Lincoln, Miss Harris and Major Rathburn, was shot by an assassin who suddenly entered the box and approached behind the President. The assassin then leaped upon the stage, brandishing a large dagger or knife, and made his escape...The pistol ball entered the back of the President's head and penetrated nearly through the head. The wound is mortal. The President has been insensible ever since it was inflicted and is now dying..." with more (see). This is followed by additional dispatches timed at 3 a.m., 4:10 a.m., and 3 p.m.
Other subheads on this page include: "The Circumstances of the Murder" "Announcement To The Army" "Announcement To The Navy" "Mr. Johnson Announced to the Army as President" "Observance of the Funeral Day in the Army" "The Funeral of The President" "Reward For the Murderer And His Accomplices" and more.
Additionally there are two editorial reports on other pages headed: "The Assassination Of the President"  and: "The Murder Of The President".
As if this content was not sufficient the front page has: "The Campaign in Virginia" which begins: "The surrender by General Robert E. Lee of the Army of Northern Virginia has set at rest in that State not only all military operations but, for the present, even the movement of troops from point to point..." with much more. The ftpg. also has other content concerning Lee's surrender, including some of the terms. Another article within is headed: "Proclamation By Jefferson Davis" signed by him in type: Jefferson Davis (see).
Terrific to have these two extremely significant & historic reports in a military newspaper. Complete in 16 pages, 10 by 14 1/2 inches, nice condition.
