THE DAILY ADVERTISER, New York, January 1, 1789

* Thomas Burling & Samuel Prince, furniture & cabinet makers

The nation's capital was located in New York City at this time, in fact George Washington had yet to arrive in the city for his inauguration, which happened on April 30, 1789.
The back page has a nice & very unusual illustrated advertisement for "Thomas Burling" the famed cabinet and furniture maker of the 18th century (see several websites concerning him). The ad illustrates several of his creations and the text offers various comments on his business, including: "...He served his time with the noted Samuel Prince and has now employed a number of his best hands..." with more (see). Also, page 2 has a report of a fire breaking out in the home of Mr. Burling (see).
Another interesting illustrated ad is for "James Hays, Leather Breeches-maker and Glover..." with details. There are several reward ads for runaway slaves, each offering details (see).
Complete in 4 pages, a bit irregular at the spine, some foxing & browning, mostly near the margins, generally good condition.
