ARMY & NAVY JOURNAL, New York, June 3, 1865
* General Kirby Smith surrender
* William T. Sherman
Obviously a military-themed publication so a nice title for Civil War content. This issue has much "wrap-up" reporting on the closing events of the war. The entire front page is taken up with: "The Military Situation" which begins: "In the surrender of Kirby Smith, absolute peace has at last dawned upon the country, peace from Maine to Mexico, from Florida Keys to California. The late movements in Texas as being the last warlike demonstrations in this now finished Rebellion..." (see). Other items in this issue include: "The General Principles of Tactics" "General Sherman's Report" which is over a full page of testimony on his actions, signed in type: W. T. Sherman. This is followed by several other letters signed by Sherman, concerning his efforts during the war. Also editorial commentary on: "Sherman's Report", plus "Kirby Smith's Surrender" plus two: "Proclamations By the President" each signed in type: Andrew Johnson, and more.
Sixteen pages, 10 by 14 1/2 inches, scattered foxing, generally nice.
