May 27, 1865

ARMY & NAVY JOURNAL, New York, May 27, 1865  As noted in the masthead this was the: "Gazette of The Regular & Volunteer Forces" and as such is replete with military news of all sorts. Most of the ftpg. is taken up with: "The Military Situation" which reports on some closing events in the Civil War. A curious items beginning on the ftpg. & carrying over to page 2 notes: "Jeff. Davis, the knight of the petticoats (for, although he probably was not rash enough to actually don that mysterious species of feminine gear, or even to get into a quiet pattern of hoop skirts, yet since he actually got on some sort of a wrapper or gown will be known in history as receiving the Order of the Petticoat) arrived at Macon on the 14th & was then sent under guard to Augusta..." with more (see images).
Among other items inside are: "On Tactics In General" "The Status of Rebel Prisoners of War" "The Fight in Mobile Bay" "Proclamation by the President" signed: Andrew Johnson (see); and much more.
Sixteen pages, 10 by 14 1/2 inches, nice condition.
