July 01, 1940

EVENING PRESS, Island of Guernsey, Channel Islands, July 1, 1940  This is a very significant newspaper and the first to report the capture of the island of Guernsey (in the English Channel) by the Germans early in World War II.
The front page is set as a broadside, with the heading: "ORDERS OF THE COMMANDANT OF THE GERMAN FORCES IN OCCUPATION OF THE ISLAND OF GUERNSEY" followed by a list of 11 item (see), beginning with: "All inhabitants must be indoors by 11 p.m. and must not leave their homes before 6 a.m."
Complete in 8 pages, mostly taken up with advertisements. Various foxing, particularly at the middle of the front page, a few very small archival mends to inside margins, otherwise good.
A very rare issue with this content in a Guernsey newspaper.
