THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, July 9, 1763  The front page has: "America" with reports from Charleston . One item predicts a promising ship-building enterprise in South Carolina, noting: "...Mr. Emrie is collecting the timber & soon going to lay the keel of another larger ship...Nothing is wanting to carry this branch to a great extend by a number of good shipwrights, for...it appears that the principal materials for ship building are cheaper in this province & of so superior a quality that vessels built here will last 3 or 4 times longer than...those built in New England, Pennsylvania, or New York..." (see).
