COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, May 29, 1813 Page 2 has 1 1/2 columns taken up with the "President's Message" signed in type: James Madison, in which he talks of the War of 1812 among other topics. Included is: "...In continuation of the brilliant achievements of our instant navy, a signal triumph has been gained by Capt. Lawrence and his companions in the Hornet sloop of war, which destroyed a British sloop of war with a celebrity so unexampled.." with more (see). It was Lawrence who died in the battle, famed for uttering the words "Don't give up the ship!"
Page 3 has a few small items relating to the War of 1812, including: "The Western Militia always carry into battle a Tomahawk and scalping knife, and are as dexterous in the use of them as any of the copper-coloured warriors of the forest.".
