FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER, New York, May 19, 1860

* Daniel Mendoza - Jewish boxer
* Tom Sayers vs. John C. Heenan
* Rare boxing prints

Most of the front page is taken up with a nice--and early--print captioned: "The Arrival of the U.S. Steamer Conveying the Japanese Embassy at Honolulu, Sandwich Islands [Hawaii]".
Inside has a full page with 3 prints of: Great Flood at Marietta, Ohio" and "View In Front Street, Marietta, Ohio on the Morning of the Flood" and: "Another view of Marietta During the Flood...".
Inside has a great full page print: "Prize Fight in the Olden Time--Boxing Match Between Richard Humphreys and Daniel Mendoza at Oldham, in Hampshire [England]". Daniel Mendoza was a famous Jewish boxer who transformed the English stereotype of a Jew from a weak, defenseless person into someone deserving of respect. He is said to have been the first Jew to talk to the King, George III. He was the British boxing champion from 1792-1795. Could this be the only periodical print showing Mendoza fighting?
There are also two pages with 5 prints concerning the famous Sayers and Heenan boxing match (see photos).
Sixteen pages, never bound nor trimmed so it folds out to one large sheet, very nice, clean condition.
