June 30, 1779

EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, June 30, 1779  Page 2 has a report from Portsmouth, Virginia, concerning a naval encounter (see). Also: "...that the night before he conducted in an express from Butler to Sir Henry Clinton, who confirms the account that 300 rebel troops who were going to the relief of Wyoming had been all cut off by the Indians...further brought in an account that a large army from Canada consisting of British troops, Loyalists and Indians, had landed at Oswego in order to commence their operations against the rebels in that quarter, not forgetting Fort Stanwix..." (see).
Page 3 has a letter from New  York noting in part: "The situation of America is deplorable at present & Congress at the lowest ebb. I am convinced that without some fatal conduct on our part or unforeseen misfortune to prop their ruin, that if we remain where we are only alarming their coasts by flying expeditions...that they must submit...In sort I have great reason to hope this year will see an honourable & happy end to the rebellion..." also a report from the Pennsylvania Gazette which includes in part: "We vainly imagine the enemy will evacuate New York. He has no such intentions...I feel mortified that the troops in New York should hold America at defiance, and sure I am they might be routed this campaign..." and more (see).
Four pages, folio size, some period notations in ads & margins, very nice condition.
